The Worst Christmas Present I’ve Ever Received

I’m not going to lie; I don’t remember exactly when I got this present. I know I was living in Brooklyn Connecticut at the time, so it had to have been either 2004 or 2005.
So, I’m 13 or 14 years old and we’re at my sister’s house for Christmas exchanging gifts. Her mother hands me a small square wrapped package. When I unwrap it I get a bit excited, it’s the type of box you usually get earrings in. She’s never given me anything more than a dollar store toy before, so it’s a bit odd. I suppose that should have tipped me off.
When I open the box I’m confused. It looks like a rock. I’m thinking “what the hell is this thing?” But when I look to my mom I can see her straining to keep her smile. She’s visibly upset. She fakes a laugh and says “you must have been naughty” all while trying to catch my father’s eye. She looks at the clock, pointedly, and says “we’ve got to head out if we’re going to make it to my mother’s on time” and stands up, pulling me with her.

If you couldn’t tell, I was given literal coal for Christmas. There is some back story, but I wasn’t a bad kid. I had never done anything to the woman to deserve her giving me coal. She claimed it was a joke, but I wasn’t laughing. Needless to say, there are quite a few reasons I don’t like my father’s ex-wife.
So, what’s the worst present you’ve ever received? Let me know in the comments below!
