Get To Know Me: 5 Things That Make Me Happy

Hello, and welcome to another edition of: Get To Know Me! The series where I post things that I think will help you get to know me a little bit better. We’re not on a schedule here, but I post when I think it’s time. This post is about five things that make me happy. I think it’s good to think about the things that make you happy. As you may know, I suffer from clinical depression. One of the ways I cope is by remembering what makes me happy and feel good. So let’s do this *insert sunglasses emoji here* *remembers I can actually insert said emoji because I’m on a Mac…* 😎

1. Lucy – Lucy is my love, my fur baby. She is the one thing in my life that has never let me down, never made me feel bad. She always greets me when I come home; she’s always down for cuddles, well, usually. She will make me happy no matter how I’m feeling and for that I will forever be grateful.

2. My mom – my mom is the best. She is always down for a chat when I stop by and gives the best advice. She calls me on my bullshit and she tells me what I need to hear, and for that I love her. These past three years without my dad have been really rough and I don’t know if I would have survived without my mom (and Lucy tbh).

3. Music – music has been a large part of my life for a very long time. I was in choir from third grade to twelfth with only a brief lapse. I listen to music on a daily basis, and I even tried my hand at writing it. I wasn’t very good. Music has a way of making even my worst days a little bit brighter. My coping mechanism when my dad died was music. I just threw my headphones on and blasted some good music. Of course, there are still songs that make me cry and have to be turned off, but still.

4. Writing – writing is my passion. And not just writing blog posts. I write often, but not as often as I would like. I’ve been trying to write a novel for about ten years or so. Writing is great because not only does it take you out of this world but also you’re building the world you want to be in. It’s very therapeutic.

5. Reading – much like writing, reading brings me a lot of joy. I’ve been reading since I was five, and I’ve been reading adult books since I was seven. I started out with authors like Stephen King, Mariah Stewart, and Lisa Jackson. Now my favorite author is Laurell K Hamilton. Her Anita Blake series is my all-time favorite series. I like her Meredith Gentry series as well, but Anita is my favorite. I don’t envision a day when I will not want to read a great novel.

I’ll be honest I was going for ten. But then I sat down and thought about it and couldn’t come up with more. It’s not really as sad as it seems. There are a lot of things I like, but these are the ones that make me truly happy. If I need to be cheered up I usually go to these things. And I almost always go to them in that order. I’m okay with this list, but maybe some day there will be more to it.

What things make you happy? Do you enjoy any of the things on my list? Let’s chat in the comments!
