Get To Know Me: My Favorite Song

Hello, tis another edition of my "get to know me" series. The reason my favorite song is in this series is because I feel it says a lot about me. However, the title is a bit misleading. I have a few favorite songs. That said, let's jump into it!

Let's start by naming the songs that I consider my "favorites." First, these are considered my favorite not because I listen to them often, but for so many reasons. I listen to music every single day. Not a day will go by that I won't listen to music. Even when I'm at my lowest, I will always have music on at some point during the day or night. Now, my favorite songs are: "Good Enough" by Little Mix, "Dreams" by Cassie Steele, "Body Love" by Mary Lambert, and "Mansion" by NF ft Fleurie.

That's a lot of songs, but there's a reason why they're my favorites. Good Enough is my top favorite song and I doubt that will ever change. Since it came out in 2014 I have listened to that song over a thousand times. In less than two years, I've listened to that song over a thousand times! That is a lot. It's also the song that was playing when I met them the first time. Now, when I hear the song I not only think of how much it means to me but I also think of the time I met them.

The song has great lyrics with a good message. It starts by talking about how she feels like she's not good enough for him and he treats her like she's not. Then it builds into "I am good enough for me and I don't care how you feel anymore." To me, it's a great message. And I feel like I'm working on getting to the "I am good enough" stage. I plan on getting a tattoo with the lyrics "am I still not good enough?" on a book with a single page and around it "you can't write a book from a single page."

Body Love is very similar except it's more about how society sees you. It's about being comfortable in your own skin and loving yourself and your body. I love the song because it's not just a feel good song, it's also good song in general. I believe it was originally a spoken word, poem-type thing? Maybe. I also know on her YouTube it's in two parts. I combined them and created new album art for it. This one is also from 2014, but it might have been performed as a poem before then.

Dreams by Cassie Steele is a song about not letting your dreams fade. I love this song so much it's my ringtone. The best part to me is:

"Watching as the world passes me by
Sittin’ in the shade of my own life
There’s so many times I lost my mind
Wonder what I’m doin’ and do I try
Everything I do is not good enough
I thought by now I’d be much further up
Instead I’m movin’ slowly in a rush
So many voices I can’t make them stop"
That's the part I have as my ringtone. The next part is where she builds herself back up saying things like "try to do the right thing, even if I'm wrong, even if I'm hurting, I'll keep moving on." There's also a part about dreaming of a better place. I often find myself day dreaming myself into a better life. This is also from 2014, and I believe I heard about it within a month of it being released.

The last one is the newest one on my list. This one is from 2015, but I heard it in 2016. I posted on facebook asking for good songs and my nephew posted this one. Since then I've gotten both of his albums and fallen in love with several of his songs. This one is about depression and the mansion is his mind. He talks about things being written on the "walls" and how there's this one room he won't go in. He also talks about being trapped in the "mansion" and just generally does a fantastic job explaining depression in a mainstream way. One thing I love about NF, who's real name is Nate, is that as a Christian rapper he doesn't swear. His lyrics are never going to be about "bitches and hoes" and he never denigrates women. He talks about real things and I can relate to his lyrics so much more than any other rapper out there.

I feel like knowing what someone listens to can give you an insight into who they are. Take me for example, my favorite songs are all moody. Frankly, as a Cancer, I AM moody! I don't think it's a bad thing. My favorite songs are also all about empowerment and taking control of how you see yourself. I'm glad I found these songs and I think I'll always enjoy them.

How about you? What are your favorite songs? Let's chat in the comments!
